We have converted this rundown area in the pictures into a beautiful green oasis.
The aim of the project is to create a community garden which is accessible for all our residents, so they have an opportunity to grow their own fresh fruit and vegetables. Linked to this would be some healthy eating sessions.
We obtained some land behind the Stobhill Link building, kindly donated by Karbon Homes. There were formally some derelict garages (picture 1) which attracted vandalism and dumping of rubbish (picture 2). The garages were demolished giving us a large space where we have created an environmentally friendly Urban Community Garden (picture 3). The garden now has several raised beds so that gardening activities can be easily enjoyed by wheelchair users and older people who are unable to stand for too long. There is a polytunnel so that participants can have a sheltered area in which to do gardening activities.
We have created a tranquil green outside space with a bench for peaceful contemplation.
We have included a large space to organise events for local people and activities for older residents who may be socially isolated.
As part of our employability project we could provide valuable experience and training in horticulture to people seeking employment.
There will be significant benefits to the health and wellbeing of the local people.
The garden can just be a place of peace and tranquillity to be simply enjoyed by local people.
The project is crucial to continuing the work we are doing at Stobhill Link and to reaching more people who need our support.
